Getting Care

How and when do you start getting care under Bayou Health?

As soon as you are eligible for Medicaid or LaCHIP

As soon as you or family members are eligible, you can use regular Medicaid and LaCHIP services, even before you have enrolled in a Bayou Health Plan.

After you enroll in Bayou Health

After you enroll and have a Health Plan and PCP, you can call your PCP to make an appointment if you need care. If you have questions about care, call your Health Plan. When you go to an appointment, take your Medicaid card and your new Health Plan I.D. card with you.

Letters confirming your choices: After you enroll, you will get a letter from Bayou Health listing your Health Plan and your PCP, if you requested one. The letter will say when you can start using the Plan and seeing your doctors.

If you did not choose a Health Plan: If you did not choose, a Plan will be chosen for you, and you will get a letter listing your Plan.

When can you start using services at your new Health Plan? You can start using your Health Plan's services on the first day of the month after you enroll. For example, if you enroll in January, your coverage will start on February 1st. If you enroll during the last 3 days of the month, you will have to wait an extra month to start using your Health Plan. For example, if you enroll on the last day of January you cannot use your Health Plan until the first day of March. If you have questions about this, call Bayou Health.

You will also get a letter from your Health Plan about Plan services. You will get an I.D. card to take to all your medical visits. If you have questions about Plan services or about PCPs, call your Plan.
